Oberbergischer Kreis. On April 28, 2026, the immigration office of the Oberbergischer Kreis, in collaboration with federal and state authorities as well as the responsible ministries, deported an Afghan offender to Afghanistan as part of a collective deportation.

The 26-year-old had been assigned to the city of Hückeswagen during his asylum procedure and had committed more than 50 significant criminal offenses during his stay in Germany and Hückeswagen. Most recently, he was serving a prison sentence in the Cologne correctional facility; with regard to his imminent release from custody, he had announced further serious crimes.

At the request of the immigration office of the Oberbergischer Kreis, the responsible district court ordered so-called deportation detention following the prison sentence, allowing the individual to be transferred to a detention facility in Büren at the beginning of April immediately after his imprisonment. Finally, on April 28, 2026, he was taken to Leipzig Airport and was one of the first Afghan nationals residing in North Rhine-Westphalia to be deported to Afghanistan.

Klaus Grootens, district administrator of the Oberbergischer Kreis, emphasizes: “The execution of this deportation required significant personnel and organizational resources. Numerous consultations with federal and state authorities were necessary, particularly for obtaining substitute travel documents and facilitating the necessary decisions and resolutions. However, the successful completion of the procedure demonstrates that the rule of law is capable of acting. It was possible to consistently enforce the existing obligation to leave the country for an individual who had repeatedly and significantly committed crimes and displayed violent behavior. At the same time, I also want to emphasize that we must always look closely: On one side, there are a few individuals who, like the deported offender, cannot relate to our values, our constitution, and the foundations of our coexistence. In these cases, the state must consistently enforce applicable law and utilize all available options. On the other side, the vast majority of immigrants are very well integrated and make an important contribution to our society. These people deserve recognition and respect.”
