Among other topics discussed were the impacts of rising costs, bureaucratic requirements, the skilled labor shortage, technological advancements, as well as the action guide for photovoltaic open-space installations in the Oberbergischer Kreis.
Melanie Müller from the NRW Chamber of Agriculture (District Office Oberbergischer Kreis/Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis/Mettmann) stated: “Agriculture is undergoing profound changes. Close collaboration between farms, advisory services, and administration is crucial to develop sustainable solutions for the region.”
At the same time, it became clear how vital local agriculture is for regional supply, the maintenance of the cultural landscape, and rural areas. Especially in the rural Oberbergischer Kreis, there are numerous small and larger agricultural farms. However, many farms face the challenge of remaining economically viable – particularly in light of rising feed and energy costs as well as the increasingly difficult search for skilled workers and farm successors.
This was also confirmed by Dr. Ines Molitor, District Manager of the District Farmers' Association Oberbergischer Kreis e.V.: “Farms are facing significant changes. It is all the more important for the administration to stay in dialogue with us and learn about the practical challenges on the farms.”
The representatives of the District Farmers' Association and the Chamber of Agriculture appreciated the constructive discussion. Topics such as planning security for agricultural businesses, promoting young talent, and societal appreciation of agriculture also played an important role. Additionally, the diverse dependencies of agriculture were discussed – such as those on political frameworks, weather and climate influences, global markets, and price developments for energy, feed, and raw materials. Bernd Schnippering, Chairman of the District Farmers' Association, reported on the current challenges in agriculture: “Working in agriculture involves great responsibility and immense dedication. It is therefore vital to raise awareness about the importance of regional products and local farms. Many farms wish for greater societal appreciation and better prospects for the next generation.”
District Administrator Grootens values the commitment of farmers and emphasized the importance of direct dialogue: “Agriculture is an indispensable part of our district. I thank all farms for their tremendous efforts, through which they contribute daily to the supply of people, the preservation of our cultural landscape, and the strength of rural areas. Regular exchanges help us better understand challenges and jointly develop support opportunities for agriculture in Oberbergischer Kreis.”
