New Equipment Trailer for the Swift Water Rescue Team of the DLRG New emergency resources for disaster relief of the DLRG in the Oberbergischer Kreis.

Oberbergischer Kreis. Heavy rainfall events and flash floods are demonstrably occurring more frequently and intensely in Germany. They often occur locally, develop within a very short time, and evade traditional warning and protection mechanisms. The consequences range from flooded streets and basements to trapped individuals, power outages, and significant risks to emergency responders. At the latest, the flood disaster of 2021 in the Ahr Valley made it clear that these situations are no longer exceptional but rather a central challenge for future disaster management.

The DLRG district Oberbergischer Kreis e. V. is the umbrella organization for 13 local groups in the Oberbergischer Kreis. In addition to classic water rescue during swimming accidents and searches for missing persons, DLRG units are particularly active during flood and heavy rainfall situations. Furthermore, the volunteer helpers are engaged in swim and lifeguard training, youth work, first aid, and rescue sports. In disaster management, they contribute their special skills where other emergency resources reach their limits – in and around water.

At the beginning of the year, the Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia distributed 40 equipment trailers for swift water and flood rescue to the 20 water rescue units in NRW. In this structure, a previous boat group was replaced by a specialized swift water rescue group, each equipped with two equipment trailers. The concept is based on the experiences from the flood disaster of 2021 and has been specifically developed for flood and heavy rainfall situations in disaster management.

One such equipment trailer is stationed with the swift water rescue team of the DLRG local group Waldbröl e.V. The unit is active both in local hazard prevention in the Oberbergischer Kreis and in disaster management in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In addition to well-trained rescue specialists, there is now also a broad, high-quality base of materials available. These include, among others, light masts, battery-powered floodlights, breaking tools, emergency backpacks, a basket stretcher, a raft, and an inflatable boat with an outboard motor.

On February 4th, the equipment trailer was officially presented during an event with District Fire Chief Julian Seeger and representatives from Department 38. In addition to presenting the materials and concept, the operational value for the Oberbergischer Kreis and professional exchange were the main focus. Interest on both sides was accordingly high.

The provision of these emergency resources represents a special feature for North Rhine-Westphalia. For the first time, state emergency resources have been made directly available to the DLRG. However, despite this premiere, it must be noted that the majority of emergency resources remain funded through donations.
