Avoiding Forest Fires: Proper Behavior in Nature The district administration provides monthly information on emergency preparedness. This time, it is about the increasing risk of forest fires and the proper behavior when spending time in nature.
Oberbergischer Kreis. Spring is currently showing itself at its best: trees and shrubs are getting green leaves again, flowers are sprouting, and the number of hours of sunshine is increasing. However, with rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall, the risk of forest fires is also increasing in the Oberbergischer Kreis. The forest fire danger index for the district is currently at level 3 out of 5. Special caution is advised, particularly with regard to the upcoming May Day holiday and traditional bonfires!
The district administration is therefore calling for special caution and vigilance!
The goal is to prevent fires early and to sustainably protect local forests. District fire chief Julian Seeger emphasizes: “The current weather conditions increase the risk of forest fires. Even small acts of carelessness can have serious consequences. Open flames, carelessly discarded cigarettes, or parking on dry grass areas pose significant risks. I therefore appeal to all citizens to act responsibly and consistently avoid potential dangers.”
In a video available on the Instagram and Facebook channels of the Oberbergischer Kreis, the district fire chief provides specific recommendations on the correct behavior when spending time in nature.
Tips for proper behavior when spending time in nature:
- When spending time in nature, the following points should always be observed:
- Smoking is prohibited in all forests from March 1 to October 31!
- No illegal waste disposal: Do not discard cigarette butts into the environment - not even from car or train windows. Bottles and glass shards can also ignite fires through the so-called magnifying glass effect under sunlight.
- Do not light campfires, torches, or grills in or near the forest. If at all, only grill at designated areas.
- Use only designated parking spaces when visiting nature. Grass areas could ignite due to hot catalytic converters.
- Keep access routes to forests and reservoirs/lakes clear - they are vital rescue routes! Be sure to observe parking and stopping restrictions.
- Report fires or smoke immediately via the emergency number 112. Leave the danger area and do not attempt to extinguish fires on your own.
- Traditional bonfires must be reported to the local regulatory office.
