Medical Assessment for School Absenteeism

Explanations:

The involvement of the school or public health service in the medical assessment of school absenteeism is based on the School Law of NRW.

The scenarios listed in the paragraphs below may make it reasonable to commission the children's and youth medical service of the health department. The decision to initiate such a commission lies with the school supervisory authority, school management, and/or youth welfare services.

• § 54 School health

In justified individual cases, involving the health department can be reasonable. However, sometimes prior assessment by youth welfare services is necessary. This is especially important under § 42 School Law NRW in cases of suspected child welfare endangerment or neglect. To avoid further delays, direct contact with youth welfare services is essential.

A written commission from an official body with a legal justification must always be provided to the health department.

Examination Procedure:

The examination procedure depends on the age of the child, the underlying illness, and the preliminary findings.
