Press release

Publication date: 2026-11-06T11:37

Temporary closures of the A4 motorway by the Autobahn GmbH Notes on increased traffic in the central district.

Oberbergischer Kreis. The responsible Autobahn GmbH has already reported that measures will be necessary to install the required barrier system to protect the Wiehltal Bridge during the period from November 9 to presumably November 30, 2026.

The Wiehltal Bridge is to remain in operation under all circumstances until the completion of the planned new construction. For this, it is necessary that all overweight vehicles leave the highway before reaching the bridge. This will now be achieved with a weighing system and a barrier for overweight vehicles, as is already practiced in other areas of the highway network.

The Oberbergischer Kreis points out that this will lead to significant traffic disruptions on diversion routes during the upcoming installation phase and beyond.

Current information on closures and detours can be found at www.autobahn.de and www.wiehl.de.

These disruptions affect all road users, including commuters, public transport users, and school traffic. Reference is also made to the press release from OVAG. It may become necessary to reroute bus lines, which may require the use of alternative bus stops.

Current information on disruptions in public transport can be found at www.ovaginfo.de or in the OVAG app.

The Autobahn GmbH will also provide regional notifications within the highway network about these closures to divert as much traffic as possible to other highways.

“Nevertheless, there will be significant disruptions on the roads surrounding the highway for the duration of the measure. These are unavoidable, as according to Autobahn GmbH, there is no alternative to the complete closure, and the barrier system must be installed to prevent further damage to the bridge structure. We have to accept this,” said District Administrator Klaus Grootens. Due to the expected increased traffic volume, remote working options should be utilized where available, and carpooling should be considered.

According to the Autobahn GmbH's plan, the entire measure is scheduled to be completed by November 30, 2026, unless there are weather-related delays.
