Measures for Traffic Violations During the Probationary Period

Beginner drivers are subject to a probationary period of 2 years. The probationary period does not apply to holders of driving license classes M, L, and T.

If a violation occurs within the 2 years, the probationary period is extended to 4 years.

• 1st Violation: Attendance at a remedial seminar at an authorized driving school

• 2nd Violation: Written warning with the option of traffic psychology counseling

• 3rd Violation: Revocation of the driving license with a three-month suspension period

If a driving license is revoked during the probationary period, the probationary period ends prematurely. When the driving license is reissued, a new probationary period begins, lasting for the remainder of the original probationary period.

Measures According to the Driving Aptitude Assessment System

According to § 4 of the Road Traffic Act (StVG), the driving license authority is obligated to take prescribed measures against driving license holders when certain point thresholds are reached in the Driving Aptitude Register (FAER).

• 4 to 5 points: Warning in accordance with § 4 paragraph 5 no. 1 StVG

• 6 to 7 points: Caution in accordance with § 4 paragraph 5 no. 2 StVG

• 8 points or more: Revocation of the driving license
  

Driving Aptitude Seminar (Point Reduction)

One point will be deducted for voluntary participation in a driving aptitude seminar, provided there are no more than five points entered in the Driving Aptitude Register (FAER) and the certificate of participation is submitted to the driving license authority within two weeks of completing the seminar.

The point reduction is only possible once within five years. The relevant point total is the one at the time of issuing the certificate of participation.
