Childcare in Daycare Centers (KiTa)

In the jurisdiction of the district youth office, there are 90 daycare centers with 5,804 places (as of 01.08.2026) under independent sponsorship and with various educational concepts for children aged four months to the start of compulsory schooling. 

The decision about the admission of a child is not made by the district youth office but by the operators of the daycare centers, taking into account the respective admission criteria, which are determined by the respective facility council – consisting of representatives of the operators, management, staff, and the parents' council.

If a family is offered a place, they can choose between 25 / 35 / 45 care hours per week. The time frame of the individual hour contingents varies depending on the opening hours of the daycare center.

Inclusion

The starting point of educational actions is the engagement with the concept of inclusion. Children with special needs represent a group that has received special attention through the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified in Germany in 2009.

Since 2017, the Oberbergischer Kreis has participated as a model region in a federal project on the topic: "Improving participation opportunities for children with (threatened) disabilities." The focus is on optimizing the collaboration between daycare centers and early intervention centers.
